Budongo Forest which is located within Murchison Falls National Park in Uganda, is a haven of biodiversity and natural wonders. Home to over 600 chimpanzees, as well as a myriad of other primate species It is also home to rare forest bird species, such as the illadopsis puveli and the yellow-footed flycatcher.

Budongo is celebrated for its rich ecological diversity. Spanning vast expanses of lush greenery and towering Mahogany trees, Budongo offers visitors a glimpse into the untamed beauty of Africa’s untouched wilderness. From exhilarating chimp tracking adventures to serene forest walks, The Forest promises an unforgettable experience for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike.

ACTIVITIES

Budongo Forest Reserve is an area with an enormous diversity in flora and fauna. Thanks to the extended and well maintained network of forest trails, it is possible to explore the dense forest with its beautiful biodiversity in different ways.

Enjoy a guided primate walk in the lush expenses of the tropical forest, in search of the habituated chimpanzee family. Your guide will explain to you more about the animals and plants species that you encounter on your way. As you tread along the forest paths, keep your eyes peeled for the majestic Black-and-White Colobus Monkeys, lively Red-tailed Monkeys, and an array of vibrant bird species.

Chimp tracking is available daily, offering two viewing times to maximize your chances of encountering these fascinating creatures. The hike typically spans 2 to 4 hours, adapting to the movement of the chimpanzees as they traverse their natural habitat. Upon locating the chimps, marvel at their behaviors as you spend an unforgettable hour observing them in their natural habitat. Watch in awe as they eat, rest, and play, offering you a rare glimpse into their daily lives amidst the lush surroundings of Budongo Forest.

Embark on an extraordinary journey with our Chimpanzee Habituation Experience, immersing yourself in the world of our primate ‘cousins’. Since 1992, Budongo Forest has been a hub for habituating chimpanzees to human presence, all while preserving their natural behaviors. This is a long process and can take up to 15 years to fully habituate a chimpanzee community aiming to foster a harmonious coexistence. During the Habituation Experience, you’ll spend a full day alongside professional guides, shadowing the chimps as they go about their daily routines. From dawn till dusk, you’ll witness firsthand the fascinating behaviors and interactions of these remarkable creatures.

Discover a bird lover’s paradise in Budongo Forest, home to an incredible 360 bird species. With expert guides leading the way, you’ll embark on thrilling bird watching safaris, available for both half and full days.

Since Budongo Forest is located in Murchison Falls National Park you can easily combine your visit to the magical forest with wildlife viewing in the northern part of the national park. Cross the river Nile and follow the winding tracks in search of giraffes, elephants, buffaloes and lions. Thanks to the palm-dotted hills, vast savannah plains and beautiful Delta area this is one of the most scenic and best places for encounters with the wild animals of Uganda. In addition, you can make a boat safari on the Nile or visit the magnificent Murchison Falls to enhance your wildlife experience even more.

Location is in the middle of the forest, in prime primate territory full of chimpanzee, white colobus and baboons.
For an eco lodge in the park it is pretty comfortable. There was warm water and ensuite (ash) bathroom. Mosquito nets were nice and pillows plentiful and comfortable. They spray repellant at night and bugs weren’t really an issue. They provide free water, tea and coffee. Room was very clean.
Service is very welcoming. Food is excellent. Kudos to their chef! Dinner is by candlelight.

We literally slept inside the rainforest

The veranda in front of our chalet we used for several hours in absolute darkness to listen to the noises of the jungle. Breakfast and dinner was very good and tasty. We fully recommend this lodge

In the beginning of Murchiison Falls National Park do you find Budongo Lodge. Great service in the middle of the jungle. Monkeys and baboons everywhere. Great!
Of course you have to do a chimp tracking, they are som beautiful

A really peaceful location and rustic style lodge. Rooms are down a windy forest path which is quite dark at night – bring a torch.
It’s located right in the forest so you’re in exactly the right spot for wildlife watching. I came mainly for the birds and went on 2 walking tours right from the lodge.

I stayed for three nights at this lodge and loved every minute. The setting is perfect, right in the most beautiful indigenous forest, with the cabins spread out so everyone had their own little portion of paradise. The staff are very focused on your welfare, especially Kule, who was such a warm and friendly host. The meals were great and we enjoyed eating out on the terrace overlooking the camp fire.
